Don't know about last weekend but I heard a rumor a couple weeks ago that someone called for help and none was available and they died after they finally got off the island. The island is very remote and you have to understand that when you go over that help may not be available. Back years ago you could count on them sending Pedro to go get you but budget cuts did away with that. It's a risk you need to be aware of before going to stay over night. I am local and know Harkers Island EMS will do what it takes but it takes time to get there and then they have to find you.
