You ain't staying at the Hilton you know that when you sign up. But with that said, it may have been a different story before the park service took over and as others said possible funding issues.
My wife and I have done 22 national parks thus far, staying in them as much as possible and I can tell you if you have a situation in most of them you are miles away from help. I love it like that and am prepared to meet my maker if I have to die in a place like that.
