Tiderunner I read one of the theories behind the "Lupton Rig" is that with the lead being secured to the leader within 6 inches of the bait and not being able to slide is so that the drum will "taste" lead and not swallow the bait. I find this to be pretty interesting as I have always pictured drum just to be eating machines and real selective. Hard fro me to believe they are spitting a big piece of mullet, menheaden, etc out because they tasted lead.
