I envision that the drum picks up the bait and then when he feels the resistance of the lead or line he takes off and sets the hook on himself. There fore the short leader and non sliding sinker do the hook setting for you especially if you are using a circle hook. We have all then how hard Drum "Hit" when your rod just bends over and takes off. That is why I tell people not to loosen their drag, you want that resistance to set the hook for you.
This is also why you need a GOOD strong sand spike.
