HARKERS ISLAND, NC – On Monday August 21, 2017, the United States will experience a total solar eclipse. The area around Cape Lookout National Seashore will be in the 90% totality range during the early afternoon hours. The National Park Service will be hosting several public events during the eclipse. These events will be free to attend and include fun experiences for all ages.
Ranger-Led Programming:
• Beaufort Visitor Center (Located at 701 Front Street, Beaufort, NC 28516)
• Harkers Island Visitor Center (Located at 131 Charles Street, Harkers Island, NC 28531)
Staff and volunteers will conduct educational programs about the history and science of solar eclipses and be available to assist the public and answer questions about this rare phenomenon.
Resources Available:
• Solar Lenses: Handheld solar lenses allow for safe viewing of the sun during the eclipse.
• Arts & Crafts: UV beads which react to sunlight, solar-reactive paper which can be used to create artwork & “Make-Your-Own” pinhole viewing devices for hands-on experiences.
• Telescopes: Solar filters make these telescopes safe for direct and indirect eclipse viewing.
• Junior Ranger: A solar-eclipse specific Junior Ranger program will be available at both sites.
All resources will be free to use by the public and will be handed out on a “first-come, first-served” basis. As these supplies are limited, we are unable to guarantee that every attending person will be able to obtain them. We also ask that for those viewing through telescopes; they do so briefly enough that other visitors may also have a turn to view.
