Started going over to Cape lookout in the early sixties with my three uncles. After going over with an 8 to 12 man group for the last twenty years in October or November, we have missed the 15 minute reservation window with the Rec.gov website the last two years and, consequently, have not made it over to “Paradise Island.” I am thoroughly disgusted with the system. Some of the guys have bought slide in campers and some are tent camping. I am going in a different direction. I have bought an ’02 4x4 Trailblazer and am in hopes of making it a simple one man camper for a 2-3 night stay each trip. With rear seats down, it will not be spacious, but adequate. How many others have tried this method? Just a sleeping mat and several coolers inside, front hitch for gear and cooler, roof top carrier for additional gear and supplies, shovel, tow rope, traction boards. Maybe a small camp stove. Have even thought of a small generator (maybe a little overboard???)
I will be going over with other guys, so will not be alone. Been over many time, but have not driven much over there. I know about airing down, staying in the tracks, being careful about where you stop, etc. Any additional advice on beach travel would be greatly appreciated.
A couple questions about the Trailblazer. Should I do a torsion bar lift to gain a couple inches in the front? Should I remove the running boards for clearance? Thanks again for any advice or check list for this type of accommodations!
