I also admire your bravery in your undertaking.
May I suggest you consider salting some bait a day of two before your trip. You can salt most any bait. I never go to the island without a supply of salted shrimp.
Place a layer of salt in a container, a layer of shrimp, a layer of salt etc..I peel the shrimp before salting. Some don't.
Works great in every way, stays on the hook better, fish like it.
