Cape Lookout National Seashore Prepares for Potential Track of Hurricane Michael - Advisory #1

Harkers Island, NC - Based on current weather models, Hurricane Michael is projected to strengthen to a major hurricane and make landfall in the Florida panhandle, then weaken to a tropical storm and track through the Southeastern United States. Though Hurricane Michael will likely not hit with the strength of Hurricane Florence, it could impact the Eastern North Carolina area with tropical storm force winds and heavy rains which may result in flooding to some areas.

Hurricane Michael preparations are underway at the park. Morris Marina (Atlantic) and Cape Lookout Cabins/Camps will operate until the wind reaches 30 mph; they will resume operation after the winds fall under 30 mph. Davis Shore Ferry will cease operations this afternoon and resume after the storm has passed. The vehicle ferry providers are contacting customers and recommending that they come off the islands until after the storm.

Island Express Ferry Service, the park's authorized passenger ferry concessionaire, closed today and will resume operations to South Core and Shackleford Banks after the storm. For more information on passenger ferry service to Shackleford and South Core Banks, call Island Express Ferry Service at (252)728-7433, or check the web at www.islandepressferryservice.com.

The park strongly recommends evacuation, but is not required. In the event of an emergency, response time may be significantly delayed by the storm; over-wash, extreme tides, rip tides, and high winds should be expected.

The National Park Service staff will be monitoring ongoing developments with Hurricane Michael and will post updates as needed on the park website at www.nps.gov/calo and via Facebook.
