HARKERS ISLAND, NC – Cape Lookout National Seashore will hold civic engagement – through the Planning, Environment, and Public Comment website (https://parkplanning.nps.gov) to discuss possible fee increases in 2019. The park is proposing the removal of seasonal rental rates and moving to a flat rate for each cabin. These rates can be viewed on the park website at www.nps.gov/calo. The park has not raised the cabin fees since they began managing the camps in 2009.

“We are committed to keeping the park affordable, but we also want to provide visitors with the best possible experience,” said Cape Lookout National Seashore Superintendent Jeff West. “The money from cabin rental fees is used to improve facilities, infrastructure, and visitor services.”

These funds were used in the past for improvements to both camp bathhouses, adding outdoor showers, and installing handicap accessible ramps. Additional revenue raised by a fee increase would help with upgrading the fueling stations, water and waste systems.

Cape Lookout National Seashore is a strong economic engine for the surrounding area. In 2017, more than 399,000 park visitors contributed $20.9 million to the local economy and supported 309 jobs related to tourism.

Civic engagement will take place via the Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (PEPC) website (https://parkplanning.nps.gov). Visitors may then search by park or by the reference number 84742 and enter their comments.

Following the public comment period, feedback will determine how, or if, a fee increase would be implemented.
