Have been going to Core Banks for just over 30 years and absolutely love the place. When Alger Willis managed the cabins they were always in great shape and kept an attendant on the island 24/7 in case there was an issue or more importantly an emergency. Since the Park Service has taken over the conditions of the cabins have declined and access to use the resource declined as well. My group always went the 2nd week of December as soon as the Park service took over cabins they were available through the end of November and more recently the last weekend in November with some reservations in recent years cancelled for those days after the last weekend. Further, the Park service removed the water tower, which gave constant water pressure to the cabins and replaced it with a generator that seems to run 24/7 to provide water pressure for the cabins. On 2 occasions in the last 5 years woke up with sons on Thanksgiving week without water as the generator ran out of gas. Entire camp had to wait until the Park service arrived by boat at 8am to restore water pressure. Surely a logical reason for replacing gravity water pressure with generator water pressure. Still enjoy the island , but very frustrated reduced time to rent cabins, decline in maintenance. Dang, went last year the week before Thanksgiving and there were 3 sections on the surf closed to driving due to turtle nesting areas. All for saving turtles, but do they hatch in November? Thinking all the ones that are going to survive climbed out the nest in the summer months. just saying. Now , I know the Park Service has done an outstanding job of cleaning up the island after it became a National Park. Have had conversations and been fishing with old timers that told of how the island looked with old rusty abandoned vehicles and the Park Service really cleaned up the island. Love the place and appreciate the Park Service in preservation thereof, but from a fisherman's point of view access to the island has been diminished in recent years.
