I've had decent luck on the backside of Portsmouth in summer and fall, falling tide seemed best, but probably doesn't matter that much...I've gigged them from as deep as I dared wade out there in the murk (always have visions of toothy critters just beyond the light) to in just a few inches of water up against the grass.. if you can find a creek ledge or a bar where the depth changes rapidly, you'll generally be in business... and as mentioned in the earlier post, watch the rays, and the snakes in the marsh can make it interesting doing the wading thing, but I wouldn't let either worry me too much.
