Another spring trip in the books, fished from the cabins south the entire time so nothing to report on the north end of the island. A few nice spots that have produced citations the past few years (around drum inlet) did not produce this year. Didn't catch a single red drum this year and only heard of one 24 inch fish caught. That being said we caught an uncountable amount of snapper/taylor blues, one chopper, and a bunch of decent sized mullet. Beached a few large rays (down on Ophelia), one was wider than my 4runner and had to be 200 or more pounds (my groin is still pulverized from those bastards). Had something hit my big rod so hard (drag was loose, clicker on)it snapped 50# mainline about 3 seconds after it picked up the bait.. sounded like a 22 pistol. Didn't even get up. Just sat there amazed and continued drinking my coors light. (could have been a shark? tarpon? who knows, any ideas?) Met a few cool folks down there, traded some info on holes that produced etc. Over all lots of catching and beer drinking. First year I didn't run out of beer! Was hoping to get my old man on his first citation but it didn't happen. Next Year!
