Portsmouth Island has always had some low spots but nothing like this in my memory.
You must understand how Hydrology works and how the sounds are shaped to understand what happened here. Ocracoke, PI and Hatteras to Buxton took the blunt of this storm because of the wind direction and the shape of Pamlico Sound. This not only cut PI in 54 places it also was the highest ever recorded storm surge in Ocracoke Village 7 feet in just two hours.
Portmouth Island will one day fill back in and you will be able to drive and enjoy but not this year and maybe not next.
Long Point cabins appear to be gone, they have been vulnerable for years and now the "perfect storm" has wiped them out.
IMO Great Island camp is just as vulnerable and the same thing could happen there.
