Good info Leadslinger thanks.
One reason IMO that Swash and Whalebone inlets filled in was because New Drum Inlet was cut through the banks in front of the town of Atlantic and that took pressure of those inlets as well as helped stop sound side flooding from Cedar Island to Harkers Island. Once New Drum filled back in that pressure has started to rebuild with every prolonged Northerly Blow. Look at a map of our sounds, they are all wide up north and funnel down to the Drain behind Lookout Light. Isabel, Floyd and Florence all flooded Davis shore after prolonged northerly blows.
But when it comes inlets on the outer Banks none tops Oregon Inlet which was cut in just one storm in 1846!
"The Oregon inlet, like all others was create when the Outer Banks was hit by a tremendous and quite violent hurricane in 1846. The hurricane created a huge watery gash between the Pea Island and the Bodie Island. A ship named Oregon, was caught between the Pamlico Sound during the storm and it was the sole witness of the formation of the inlet. After the storm passed, the crew headed to the Outer Banks and relayed the story of the creation of the new inlet and thus ever since the inlet has been referred to as the Oregon Inlet."
