Cape Lookout National Seashore - Post Hurricane Dorian
Advisory 5

HARKERS ISLAND, NC
– Cape Lookout National Seashore staff continues to be supported by 22 National Park Service employees from several National Parks across the nation. The public should not enter closed areas of the park until stabilization and restoration efforts are complete.

  • North Core Banks remains closed to the public.
  • Portsmouth Village and Long Point Cabins: Crews are working to stabilize buildings.
  • Shackleford and South Core Banks are open to all visitors for day-use and camping.
  • Visitors should prepare for their visit to Shackleford and South Core Beaches:
    o Be careful, as there remains an abundance of storm debris on the beaches.
    o Sturdy footwear is highly recommended.
    o Prepare by bringing water and food and plan to pack out all personal trash.
  • Water has been restored to Shackleford Banks and South Core Banks. All restrooms, water fill stations, rinse off showers, etc. on these islands should be functional as of Thursday, September 19.
  • The Keepers Quarters Museum will reopen on Friday, September 20.
    o Hours of operation: 9:30 A.M. – 4:30 P.M.
  • The Light Station Visitor Center will reopen on Thursday, September 19.
    o Hours of operation: 9:30 A.M. – 4:30 P.M.
  • Great Island Cabin Camp will reopen on Thursday, September 19.
    o Hours of operation: 8:00 A.M. – 3:00 P.M.
  • As of September 19, South Core Banks will be open to all visitors for beach driving and vehicle camping. Check with ferry services for details on vehicle transportation.

The National Park Service staff will be monitoring ongoing recovery efforts regarding Hurricane Dorian and will post updates as needed on the park website and via Facebook and Twitter. www.nps.gov/calo
