What a great story of bravery and history. People today have no Idea how strong and resilient folks were back in the day!
To imagine being in an opening boat in a strong storm for over 48 hours sopping wet an cold! How did they survive?
A few thoughts that came to me while reading this story are : Have any of you ever been lost in a fog on the water? If you have you know how disorienting it can be, if you have not, you have NO IDEA ! 300 yards becomes 3 miles.Even Up and down even get confusing.

Another is how many of the old timers remember the "Steel Boat" about 1/2 mile north of the gun club? it was a life boat that came off some ship and hopefully saved lives. It was totally made of steel and completely enclosed so that it could roll upside down and not take on water but must have been like being in a cement mixer till you washed up on the beach.
How many of you have ever tried to launch a boat into the surf or seen the commercial fishermen launching one to go after mullet ? It's not easy on a mild day I can't imagine trying to launch one into a strong storm, If it was to roll back on you every one would be killed or maimed .
How many of you ever have been up in the top of the Coast Guard station, or climbed the crows nest light pole outside? How they could see a boat 8 miles out in the shoals during a storm was a miracle in the first place, then to take an open boat out only powered by oarsmen is just unimaginable today !
When it's open and you are on South Core banks or on Harkers Island be sure to take the time to visit the museum at the light house or the Core Banks Decoy museum. You will see much history and learn so much about the life and times of the Outer Banks and the folks who dared to live there .
