Dear Volunteer Tagger,
Thank you for participating in the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries Volunteer Red Drum Tagging
Program. Since 1983, over 30,000 red drum have been tagged by volunteer anglers through this program. In
2018, a total of 1,114 adult red drum were tagged throughout coastal North Carolina from Carova in the north to
Oak Island in the south (map below). We are still tallying the results for 2019 and cannot finalize this summary
until we have data from all of you. Please send your data via mail or e-mail. Many thanks to those who have
already reported for 2019.
During 2019, a total of 22 recaptures were reported. A few highlights from the year include a fish tagged by
Captain George Beckwith that was recaptured near Garbacon Shoal, Neuse River after 6,896 Days (nineteen
years) at-large. The recapture area is 8 miles from the tagging location near the mouth of the Neuse River. One
out-of-state return occurred in 2019. A fish tagged on the beach in the Carova area was recaptured from the
Sandbridge Pier in Virginia after about a year at large. The greatest distance between tagging and recapture
locations for a fish was 66 miles. That fish was tagged in Ocracoke Inlet on October 22, 2018 and recaptured in
Pettiford Creek off the White Oak River on July 16, 2019. A summary of all returns for 2019 can be found in
the attached table.
