An Analogy: Eugene Schieffelin introduced 60 European Starlings into NY Central Park in 1890. He later introduced 16 European House Sparrows into Central Park. He formed the Acclimatization Society in the US so they could all take part in introducing more non native birds (considered invasive species now). Starlings and House Sparrows rob nests ,destroy eggs and kill hatchlings of native birds. Bluebirds,woodpeckers,have declined in numbers and $800 million worth of farmers seeds are destroyed each year. Cabins now get taken within 1 minute of opening.Both points are so crowded ,you can't fish the best spots. Old salts coming for 20,30,40 years who are too old to camp can't get cabins and some of the newbies to the island grew up with no father to teach them to respect nature,the island, and proper manners. It will never be like it used to so just like those native birds, we are just going to have to live with it. Mr. Scheifflin is remembered as being a naive and misinformed man.
