For years I've heard stories of how WWII effected the Outer Banks and Cape Lookout in particular. Stories of how ships would anchor up in the bight behind the cape and wait for the dark of the moon to try and make it through the German Submarine wolf packs waiting in the shoals to attack them. I remember the gun mounts on the West beach and ammunition bunkers and radio rooms near the Coast Guard station. The machine gun emplacements over looking the village. Stories of anti submarine nets and mine fields that guarded the entrance to the natural harbor behind the cape where today sail boats anchor up while on a pleasure cruise up and down the coast of the US.

This is a great read and thanks to Catamount for drawing my attention to it.
Enjoy this lesson of history.
