I Went to North Core in the late 60's & 70's with Don Morris and fished Ocracoke inlet with Norman Miller first; I didn't go over to South Core till the late 70's, then there were a lot of water tanks, around the cabins. There would be gas cans in the pump shacks, you'd fill up the Briggs and Stranton crank it up and let it run till water ran over the top, or the motor ran out of gas.
Stirling was gone by then and it was Alger Willis and his wife. My single cab long bed truck hung over the back of the Miss Ann and spray was breaking over the side and I was scared to death on that first trip. Once on the island you were on your own. If you needed some supplies there was a note pad at the dock, you went there and left a note/shopping list and they would bring it over the next day when they could. Bread to starters to clutches, if you wanted it and they could find it they would bring it. Good People they were!
Then we went to CBs and could call "Glenhaven Base" and place our orders. that was when we knew we had it made... LOL
Most of the cabins didn't have showers and we would take solar shower bags and hang them from the rafters on the porch and heat water in a coffee pot if it was cloudy. But the cabins had toilets and gas stoves and that was living in high cotton compared to camping in a tent.
Bored folks had either drawn art work on the walls or shot holes in the ceilings while trying to kill mosquitos or green heads. Either way it was an experience
Nice thing back then was everyone you passed waved and no one would steal a thing. And if you broke down and someone came by they would help you fix the problem or take you in for the night.
That should have never changed and really hasn't for the most part.
Good memories, thanks guys
