Sometimes they are awesome. Around the camper some times. Sometimes if you have a honey hole on a steeper bank. ( Flat banks and the tide moves so much you cant keep the canopy near your sand spikes without too much work).
Here is how to do it. Fairly easy to put up and will take a 20 plus mph blow. Do not substitute rope for the bungy cords.
Cut 4 2" pvs pipes 4' long. Angle one end. Cut 4 pices of 1.5" pvc 6' long. Drill holes big enough to hook bungy cords on one end of 1.5" pieces
With mallet, drive the 4 different 2" pieces half way into the sand making the four corners. Now insert the 1.5" pieces into the 2" pieces. Attach STOUT bungy cords to holes at top of 6" pieces and then heavy duty plastic tarp to bungy other ends. The combination of the stretch of the cords and the bend of the poles will handle most winds. Easy to put up and does not take much space. Worth its weight in gold during the summer some times.
Just my opinion. Keeping wife comfy is a good idea if you want to stay awhile.
