I used 17 lb suffix with a shock for a long time, but since switching to braid I would never go back. My whole group primarily uses Calcutta 400's and 65 lb power pro super slick or Daiwa J Braid. Have not had any issues and casts so much better. I think it's more sensitive as well. I used to hate hearing that shock knot going through the guides no matter how small I made it. I run 65 lb braid over a 17 lb mono backing (4-5 turns on the reel before the braid) straight to my drum rig which is a 8/0 trokar circle hook crimped to 150 lb Trilene big game mono for my bite leader which is only 3" long. The bite is crimped via a Jinkai sleeve to the swivel. I tie my braid to the swivel with a polamar knot and use a berky crosslock to attach a 5 or 6 oz frog tongue. I've never broken off.
