I say all this as a lightly experienced novice. I like to run a fluoro leader on my small lure rod for the stretch that braid doesn't have, for greater abrasion resistance, and less visibility. I've fished braid straight to my lure, but I noticed the line started to look fuzzy. Like it was starting to fray 10-12 or more feet. It was more evident the closer I got to the lure. I attributed it to wear from casting and rubbing the sand bars. Also, if you're casting a larger spinner with braid for drum, like my 12' okuma setup, braid is smaller in diameter, and can cut you pretty bad. I've been cut, not bad, by the 30# braid on my okuma, while casting 6oz's of lead and probably 2oz's of cut bait. I like about 15'+ of 50# mono leader that's less likely to cut my finger, and for stretch. Just as a test, I made a 20' 50# mono leader and attached it to something fixed. Pulled the other end, and got about 1-1/2' to 2' of stretch. I call that leader setup my combo. 2 loop bottom rig, with 4" drum rig off the weight. I make the loops a little further up, and make the first one long, and the second one longer. I'm attempting to target multiple species on one setup, reds, mullet, pomps, blues. no swivels. Hooks and lures are the only metal I like on my leaders. double uni's for all my leader to main line connections.
