Rivenbarks are tops in drum fishing

llen and Sharon Rivenbark can share bragging rights about being DIFF's best drum fishermen after they caught the two largest red drum in the club annual surfishing tournament held Sept. 28-30.
Allen edged out his wife by a mere 2.5 inches in the drum category. His fish measured 72.5 inches (length plus girth) while Sharon's second-place drum was 70 inches. Allen first-place fish was worth $500, while Sharon's brought in $225.
Sharon also tied for fourth in the whiting category, bringing here total winnings to $$275.
John Often, though, was the tournament's biggest prize winner with $575. He caught the largest gray trout and the third-largest whiting. Larry Taylor was close behind with $500 in winnings after catching the second-place fish in the bluefish and whiting categories.
Other multiple winners were Les Gladden, $475; Doug

Jones, $450; Herman Vick, $350; and Dane Curtsinger, $112.50.
Congratulations to all the winners.
The fishing was just fair because of marginal weather. High winds and rough surf Friday made fishing particularly tough. But the 135 entrants seemed to take it in stride, and everyone seemed to have a good time.
The tournament this year will be Sept. 26-29. The entry will increase to $60 to help pay for tournament hats. The 135-entry cap will also be dropped. All club members who enter before July 31 will be allowed to fish in the tournament. The tournament's total purse, however, will remain $6,100, assuming that at least 135 entrants.
