I was down for the first time 4/30-5/02, really enjoyed it and will be back soon. One of my buddies caught this shark on 4/30 down at the south point. It was 3" shy of 8 feet! He caught it on 40# test after a two hr fight, then released it.
I was hoping someone could tell me what kind of shark and an estimated weight. I was dumbfounded! do you catch a lot of sharks like this from the surf?
 Thanks,

Just got back from the island and wanted to share these photo's with all. We fished the south point on the 15th and caught some 1-2 lb blues. (Good fight). We had our best luck at mile maker 33 & 42. Whiting, mullet, trout and a few blues, plus one nice 7lb 11oz Black Drum (Caught by me PC Doctor). Lot of sharks and skates! We left on the 19th with about 15lb of boneless fish ready to eat.

ON NOVEMBER 7TH AROUND 5.00 O CLOCK IN THE AFTERNOON I WAS
FISHING JUST BELOW THE LIGHTHOUSE AROUND MILE MARKER 42.. THE
WIND WAS BLOWING OUT OF THE NORTH AND COMING STRAIGHT DOWN THE
BEACH AROUND 25 MILES AN HOUR.. I WAS USING CUT MULLET AND HAD
TIED ON TWO WEIGHTS TO KEEP IT OUT.... THEN I HOOKED THIS MONSTER
OF A RED DRUM PICTURED BEING HELD BY MY FISHING BUDDY JAY
HONEYCUTT.. AFTER ABOUT 45 MINUTES AND DOWN THE BEACH ABOUT 300
YARDS IT FINALLY GAVE UP AND CAME TO SHORE...IT WAS OVER 48
INCHES LONG AND 27 INCHES AROUND AND WE ESTIMATED THAT IT WEIGHED
ABOUT 50 LBS. IT FOUGHT HARDER THAT ANYTHING THAT I HAD EVER
HOOKED BEFORE.. AFTER A SHORT PHOTO SESSION IT WAS RELEASED
UNHARMED... MAYBE SOMEONE ELSE WILL HAVE THE THRILL THAT I HAD
THAT EVENING...

We just wanted to share with you the biggest catch that we've had on the island...
Here is a big Southern Atlantic Stingray that we caught on Nov. 2, 2003.  We hooked it at about 9 am down between the point and the rock jetty and it took 3 of us 2 hrs to get it on shore.  It measured a whopping 10 ft long and over 4 1/2 ft wide!  It's tail alone was over 6 ft long.  It was heavy too, we estimated the weight to be around 175-200 lbs.  After posing for a few pictures it was released back into the ocean to swim another day.
Thanks again for another
memorable trip!

Hey Ya'll,

Thought I would send ya some pics of a couple of the fish my ma in-law and I caught on cold, windy nights, Nov 8-11. We caught several keepers, but the fun ones were the ones we put back. It was a total of 4 large red drum the first was 27 lb, then 35 lb, 31 lb and finish up our trip a 50 pounder. It took 35 minutes to convince it to shore.  We always have a good time when we go to the island...and these were the biggest fish either of us had ever caught, which makes for great memories and fish tales with proof (pics).

Here are pictures of two proud members of our party with drum caught on 4-18 and 4-19. Look closely and it's no secret where they were caught. Mark Danieley's drum was 49" and Robin Giles's was 42". Both were released unharmed. Another successful trip!.

Thanks,

Here is one of our group, Austin Foster (AKA Zorba) from Raleigh.
After catching limits of trout at sunset, we notice a nice break in the outer bar right in front of us as the tide began to turn. So what does Zorba catch on a 2 hook bottom rig with rotten shrimp? 42"x26.5"

I keep tell'n em "they didn't locate that fish camp there for nothing!!!"

Appreciate it if you get a chance to post this.

Austin is not that computer literate and seeing his picture on the www would blow his mind. This fish was caught smack dab between cabins 10A & 10B.

Family and friends on the annual trip to the Banks. Caught some Albies. They would swim right by our legs chasing minnows. Had a blast as always. Caught plenty of fish,  November 2002.

1 - Nice keeper Red caught during a run of blues and trout. It was just of size so we kept plus it was this guys first Red ever caught after years of fishing the surf.  2 - This is Chad Dutton cast netting for finger mullet. He has a pretty good throw with that net wouldn't you say? (..wonder if he gives lessons? - Tom)  3 - See what I mean. Shhhhh.....don't tell anyone about this honey hole. 4 - Yes this guy is in his underwear. I told him waders aren't that expensive.

Tom,
It was nice meeting you on the north end last week. Here are two 43 inch fish caught there on high tide 10-18-02 at about 9:30 pm. These were the only two we caught but I did see six more about the same size.

Good fishing to all and can't wait until next year.

Tom,
More fun for the masses.
September 2002:

My buddy and I came across a school of Spanish busting glass minnows. Jumped out of the vehicle and hung this Fat Albert on the first cast. 20 minutes later and half a mile down the beach this guy finally came to the beach. I ran back to the truck for a quick photo and release. Meanwhile my buddy is steady filling up the cooler with nice keeper Spanish. While still huffing and puffing from the jog up the beach I cast again and Wham, Albert's little brother started my real screaming. Here we go again. It doesn't get much better than that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Jack,

Duane Jordan here (The Chumbucket)!
I don't think I've had the pleasure of meeting you in person, yet!
Maybe next trip? Got a picture of a big ray we landed on our last trip. Didn't know if you wanted to post it or not. Love the website and of course...the Island!   See ya (hopefully) next trip!

"I got the 3 drum on Oct 23rd 1999. I was really surprised at luck. Before then the biggest drum I'd ever caught was around 6-7 lbs. I enjoyed the whole trip.  You may know some guys that witnessed my 3rd catch. The Byrds from Kitty Fork area have a RV called "Bird Nest".   Mac Sutton was with them too.  I don't know them well but we're from same neck of the woods and I showed them the last drum I got that night.  We all had a fit.  Can't wait to go back sometime."

I really love the Island and your website.
Thought I'd pass along a pic of my biggest Drum.
It was caught 11-08-01 just north of the Point on the south end.
 Fish was 47 1/2"L x 28"G. Estimated 46.6lbs using a formula I found.

Keep up the good work on the site.

Jack, thought you might like to see a 17 lb flounder. Only one problem, it was caught on the wrong island.......Portsmouth!! Charlie Schoonermaker was the lucky soul.
