Winter Fishing on CALO
Swiftly by ancient custom all over Cape Lookout,
The sky fills with sea gulls--hundreds of same-colored kites,
Staining like marvels on windows, the great blue air.
This marvelous glass of God spotted with envoys from the beach.
Between where we fish and those kites such intense power strains.
Which holds? Which is held?
The power flows up their wings into the sky
Out of the hands
That have set this glory there,
Our faces lifted to love what is made here,
Cape Lookout and another year for the heart
To be lifted
Between the waters and the sky.
