Fair-to-middling fishing. A variety of fish in the surf: sea mullet up and down the beach, decent bluefish from time to time and one (only one) big chopper, about 11 pounds, caught by Ron Kowalczyk on a falling tide just after sunset. Skates prevalent of course, but not so thick as to be a nuisance. Few little sharks. No baitfish in the water that we could tell. Did have a tremendous bird event hit shore Friday, just at the edge of the weather front that brought several inches of rain. Watched them come in from way outside the bar and sure enough, they got right into casting distance just as the skies opened up. Only pulled one blue out of that blitz, they were headed up the beach faster than we could run soaking wet. Almost had a Bad, Bad Truck! photo op Saturday as high tide was coming in...between the point and the gun mounts, got into some awful soft, deep sand, trying to cut through a swash that we didnt think looked all that bad. Slurp! Up to axles in an instant. 45 minutes to high tide and no one in sight, handheld VHF wouldnt get out far enough. Thanks to the guys from Mocksville on 4-wheelers who ran me up to the point, and thanks to the Auburn Tiger (was your name Phil?) who helped snatch us out just in the nick of time, as tide water washed over his wheels. Just to show that the world sometimes operates justly, about 2 hours later, Phil and his son pulled in a 40 inch drum just inside the hook, and got a well-deserved cheer. Not much else biting that night, but we quit early, about 8:30 or so. The back road was under about 4 inches of water for a mile or so north of the lighthouse, and after our narrow escape earlier, that had us a little on edge as we retreated to the cabin. By the way, as we pushed the Jeep out of the tide, something in the pool of water stung Bland (Busted W) on the foot, and the next morning he was all messed up, dizzy and sick. We were thinking about chopping him up for bait but already had a buch to spare due to getting rained out Friday. Once he got to Kings in Kinston and had a bbq sandwich he came back around, but that was one sick fella for a while. Might want to be careful wading barefoot through those tidal pools. Thanks to the AWFC folks once again for a great trip! New caretaker, Mitch, is a budding pro out there. See ya in the fall!
