The bight is also called the spit. It is one of the best places on the island to fish but has been closed to vehicle traffic for about 10 years. Its about a 2 mile walk from the jetty but well worth it on the right day. Its the only place on the outer banks that you can cast into 30 feet of water. It can be THE SPOT for spanish, albacore, cobia, sharks, flounder, trout and blues on the right day. It also is the best place on the island to catch jumping mullet when theyre moving. Ive been asking the Park Sevice why its closed sense they closed it and the only answer Ive ever gotten is that the boat people wanted it for themselves. Next time you have a chance ask a ranger, and see what answer you get? If you ever go fish it youll know what a unique and wonderful spot it is. If you do want to fish it, drive as far past the jetty as legally possible and walk to the sound side, then just turn left and follow the shore line, when you get to the end of the island there will be a big red bouy #4 marking the entrance to Bardens inlet(the bight or spit). Anywhere along the shore line the water drops quickly to 20+feet and fish can be anywhere, watch for breaking fish and birds.
