Just got back from the island and wanted to give ya a Labor Day fishing report. Fished Sat-Mon. between ramps 29 & 28 catching nice mullet, big spots, trout, 12 to 14inch flouders, and croakers. Saw one drum caught also. There are a couple nice holes between 29 & 27. Monday went down to the point fished, Got set up and then bam, the pole bent over and the line took just took off and off around 200 yards, reel in around 40 yards and then it just took that line back out. Then all of a sudden I thought it might be a large ray, because I couldnt get it to move, decided after 30 minutes it was time to tight drag and go to work. Started pulling and reeling with arms feeling like jello finaly got it about 40 feet off the beach. With strong current and undertoe I decide I wanted to see what this thing was so I hand my friend my rod so it wouldnt break and grabbed the line and started pulling to get the fish over the drop off. After 45 minutes I caught my first black tip, around 5 + ft. long and guesting around 50 + lbs. using cut mullet. Got the fish in on a 2liter bottom rig with 5/0 circle hooks. The hook in its mouth had broke and the other hook got caught in its tail. I think that was why it felt that it pulled so strong. I would like to thank the guy from Asheboro for helping me get the hooks out. I dont like getting to close to the mouth. Also there is plenty of bait in the water so take your cast nets. You can always tell when sea gulls turn down free bread.
