Bill W is right, it will not affect the streghth of the rod by cutting the butt. But it will dramatically effect the feel of the rod. Since you are doing it yourself, I would cut no mre than 2 off at a time and see how it feels. IMHO if you go ahead and cut the 8 off and dont like it, its too late, do it a little at a time. You might not need to cut as much as you think. Good luck!
