Agreed that you can't build a custom for as cheap as you can buy a factory rod. However, you should easily be able to build a decent rod up to 10' with a materials budget of $250. A decent rod lathe, with drying motor, can be obtained for $300 give or take. I'm not into the decorative wraps but I like the idea that I can build a rod exactly the way I want it. It's a fun, if not cheap, hobby.
