HELP IS NEEDED!

As you may be aware, the island had severe damage not only the island itself but the physical structures there as well.

The Park Service has made tremendous gains in preparing the island for visitors. Priorities were set first to repair the docks and ramps which in turn will enable repairs to cabins and other systems necessary to accommodate visitors. While many feel that this can happen overnight others realize that time is needed to restore the island to its splendid nature.

Many have asked when they can volunteer their time. Numerous work trips will be planned in the future, most likely starting in the spring of 2004. However, the first of these work trips will be held next weekend (11/23 & 11/24). Current plans are to provide beach cleanup assistance North of the camp. As a minimum, visit the DIFF website and register you name as a volunteer for future work trips.

Currently, there are no facilities on the island so we are in great need of individuals with RVs who can accommodate guests for both sleeping and bathroom usage. Otherwise, you may camp or leave the island to return to the mainland.

The Park Service will pay walk on fees for people who attend. If you decide to take a vehicle, you must pay applicable fees. I encourage everyone in your group to split these costs.

The first ferry on Saturday and last ferry on Sunday are the planned on and off times.

Certainly, we will get in some fishing time as well.

Lastly, I want to send a sincere thank you in advance for those who can make it. I look forward to hearing from you. Please advise me ASAP if you can be there @ (336) 766-9473 or email @ rwise10230@aol.com.
