I would tell the whole story from the time we left Ky from the time we got back, but it would take too long. This will be long to as it is.
First things first, the AWFC group was great. We came down with 22 people and more than half were half an hour late to get to the dock. They had a ferry waiting for us. They were very friendly and accomodating. The first group over headed straight for the the south end. The wind was strong and the sand was soft so one of our vehicles pulling a trailer buried itself to the axle. I was driving a rented all wheel drive SUV with very little clearance. This was the first time I had driven anything like this on the island. I got stuck about 5 times in the soft sand going to the point, but we easily got ourselves out. Once I figured out how to drive on the sand I never got stuck again, but I definetly would recommend something with 4 wheel drive and good clearance. Only 4 adults out of the group knew what the island was like and we talked it up pretty good and convinced the other families and friends to go. The wind the first day combined with the vehicles getting stuck was very frustrating. We did not get camp set up until after 6:00 due to the issues we were having and it was difficult to set up the tents in the wind. Due to the lack of vehicle space compared to people we had, I had to make two round trips back and fourth from the point to the camp.(That wont happen ever again!) The third trip, was made without me going. When the vehicle came back to the point, the gas tank was empty, so the next morning I had to ask my neighbor who went, if he would drive me back to AWFC to get some gas... I am glad he didnt have any of his guns. He was more frustrated than I was because of the previous day. Saturday was perfect weather. The way it usually is when I have come before. That day we noticed our tent had a busted zipper at the bottom, so the sand fleas ate us up at night. I definetly would recommend more bug spray at bed time. Sunday it rained most of the day. We moved camp that night out in front of the cabins so we would not have to rush to get to the ferry the next day. That night was very entertaining.
We only got to fish on Saturday and did not come close to catching anything, but two of the kids with us caught a flounder in the surf with their hands. I will send a picture in when I get a chance.
When the weather is nice, Cape Lookout cant be beat. When the weather is not so nice, it can be hard to handle. Two of the guys who went with us a are big hunters, and one of them was saying that he has hunted in the most miserable weather, but to find the great days, you have to go thru some of the worst. Looking back now we laugh at some of the things that happened, but going thru them was at times trying. I still had a great time, though many of the people who went didnt. Many of us will be back, and many wont.
