There was some dicussion of this on the Tradewinds board awhile back. There was a link to an article from the Baltimore Sun where they had done some research on the commercial fishing industry.
The by-kill, that is the by-kill, not what they keep but what they KILL that they cannot use was an estimated 27 million TONS per year. That is 27,000,000 X 2,000 lbs = 54,000,000,000 lbs of fish KILLED every year.
54 BILLION lbs, if there were 54 million rec fishermen we'd each have to catch and keep 1000lbs apiece to equal that. There is no way I have EVER come close to catching and keep ing 1000lbs of fish in a year.
