Here's another installment of our look at useful Web sites. This time, we describe a few weather sites to help you plan your trip. Actual readings from the weather tower near the Point can be found at www.drumwagon.com.
Newport weather station, www.nws.noaa.gov/er/mhx: This is a very nice site run by  the National Weather Service's office in Newport. The station covers all of northern and central coastal North Carolina, including Cape Lookout. You'll find weather observations from the area, forecasts, buoy readings, sea surface temperatures, and satellite images.

National Hurricane Center, www.nhc.noaa.gov: Everything you ever wanted to know about hurricanes can be found here, including advisories, satellite loops and cool graphics that show the expected path for each storm. For the true hurricane addicts, the site even includes the detailed discussions that the center's forecasters send to your local weatherman. Now you can sound as knowledgeable as he does. There are also official histories for many past storms

Fishing tournament

this will be provided by RW Manufacturing, Inc., of Winston-Salem. The company, owned by DIFF members Roger Wise and Ron White, specializes in metal fabrication, including metal shearing, forming, machining, and welding. It also makes awnings and products for the signage industry.
Alger Willis Fishing Camps had paid for the lunch in the past.
The club will pay for the tournament hats and shirts this year because sponsors couldn't be found. The DIFF board voted at its July meeting to use $2,000 from past raffle proceeds to pay for the shirts and hats.
DIFF member Roger Wise invites all club members to bring their musical instruments to Cabin 8 for a jam session 8 p.m. Wednesday before the tourna
ment.

"I've heard all sorts of stories about Davis Island and how things 'used to be,' especially how the fish were in greater numbers and how fishermen would sit around fires on the beach and see who could lie the best," Roger writes. "I've even heard of impromptu gatherings of musicians playing whatever song someone started to play.  That's where we come in."
Alvin Baugus, another DIFFer, will be in charge of the jam. He's quite a talented guitar, fiddle and banjo picker and played old-time music under the stage name of Riley Baugus with the likes of Tim O'Brien and Dirk Powell. He studied music under Tommy Jarrell, a well-known North Carolina fiddler.
All musicians, regardless of ability, are invited to jam. Those who can't play a lick can go, listen, and enjoy.
