The Davis Island Fishing Foundation is proud to offer a unique and forgotten piece of island history. This stunning photograph of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse appeared in the Winston-Salem Journal in 1967 and then was stored in a closet for the next 32 years. It would have been thrown away if not for a Journal photographer who was struck by its stark beauty and recognized its historic significance.

The black-and-white photograph shows the lighthouse and a dilapidated keeper's house at a contentious time in their history. Congress had a year earlier approved the formation of a national seashore on the Core Banks of North Carolina but the park's fate was far from certain as federal and state governments debated who would buy the needed land.

The
Journal has graciously allowed DIFF to sell limited-edition prints of this historic photograph. We are offering them in two sizes -- 8 x 10 and 16 x 20 -- in a satin matte finish. A short history of the lighthouse and the photograph printed on parchment paper will be included with each print.

DIFF is a non-profit group dedicated to preserving the cultural and natural resources of Davis Island. Proceeds from the sale of the prints will be used on island projects.
