Gray trout,
whiting highlight
spring fishing
When the weather cooperated, the fishing was tolerable this spring at Davis Island.
Gray trout, whiting and small blues were scattered along the beach in May. DIFF members who joined the work group in mid-month caught a number of  nice whiting and some good-sized grays.
Other members who fished the island this
spring reported catching
small blues up to 17 inches at the cape.
In June, Spanish  mackerel appeared in the early morning and late evening at the cape.
There were no reports of any large drum being caught this spring.
The weather was less than cooperative at times -- windy and rainy in the early spring and hot and sultry lately. No-see'ems and biting flies have bedeviled fishermen on still days.
So far the local shrimp catch doesn't seem to have been affected by the winter's wet weather. A rainy winter can depress the harvest by raising salinity levels in the sounds, but the early-season shrimping has been good, and fishermen have been able to find fresh bait shrimp.
