Decision on park plan expected in February

The National Park Service should reach a decision on the management plan for Cape Lookout National Seashore by February.
Agency planners and Karren Brown, the seashore's superintendent, have chosen one of the five draft alternatives to the plan that have been under review for almost a year. They are scheduled to discuss their recommendation with the Park Service's regional director in Atlanta on Feb 5, but Brown said she couldn't talk publicly about the "preferred alternative" until it is approved by the regional director.
If the recommendation passes muster in Atlanta, notices will be sent to the public, Brown said, and another public meeting will be held.
Brown hopes to be able to talk about the new management plan at the DIFF Club's Annual Meeting Feb. 27 at the Pineville Volunteer Fire Department.
Park planners have been studying five possible amendments to the Cape Lookout plan. Abandoning the current Great Island camp for a new camp near the lighthouse is among the options. Operating camps at both locations is another alternative being studied.
The DIFF Club has consistently opposed any plan that includes developing the south end. Neither of those options has received any public support at the two meetings that the Parks Service has held on the subject.
Because of public opposition to a fish
camp near the lighthouse, it's not likely that Brown and the planners will chose one those options.
The DIFF Club has, instead, endorsed the draft amendment that leaves the

for Annual Meeting

Come join us Saturday, Feb. 27, in Pineville for the DIFF Club's Annual Meeting.
We'll get started about 11:30 a.m. at the Pineville Volunteer Fire Department with some oyster stew followed by a fish fry.
Afterwards, we'll hear from some guest speakers, including Karren Brown, who is the new superintendent at Cape Lookout National Seashore. By then, the National Park Service should have decided on an alternative for the park's management plan, and  Karren should be able to tell us what will happen to the fish camp at Great Island and if any development is planned for the south end.
We'll also elect a board of directors for 1999.
Door prizes will be given out, and generator raffle tickets will be available.
Come break bread with us and swap a few fishing tales.
