Alger Willis Fishing Camps will have to get the approval of the N.C. Utilities Commission before raising ferry rates. The National Park Service used to approve the rates, but Willis must now also get the commission's consent. The commission, which has jurisdiction over all ferry rates in the state, decided early this summer to review Willis' rates requests. In the past, the commission allowed the Park Service to decide solely on the ferry rates. Any rate request could be the subject of a public hearing called by the commission. "I don't think it will be a big issue," said Annette Mitchum, co-owner of Willis, "but it will mean more paperwork." Willis still hasn't found an ice house close to Davis that still makes block ice. supplier in Beaufort stopped making blocks this year. Only bagged ice is available at Willis. Fisherman planning long trips to Davis often stopped at the Beaufort ice house to buy blocks that could be custom cut to fit their coolers. A survey of ice houses between Raleigh and Davis along U.S. 70 found only one that sells blocks. That one, at 820 N. Craven Street in New Bern, sells 300 pounds for about $30. The same amount of ice used to cost $8 in Beaufort. Jackie Parker, who had a stroke last year, left her job at Willis because of medical reasons. Annette said she has no plans to replace Jackie.
