Park Service revises Lookout alternatives

The National Park Service has revised its draft alternatives for the management plan for Cape Lookout National Seashore.
The specific changes to the four alternatives that the Park Service released earlier this year weren't available as we were putting together the newsletter. Most of the options remain: raze the current Great Island camp and replace it with a new camp near the lighthouse or build two smaller camps -- one near the lighthouse and the other at Great Island. Another option under consideration is to keep the camp site at Great Island but replace the cabins with modern structures.
The Park Service will have two public meetings on the revised alternatives Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 23 and 24, at the Duke University Marine Lab at Pivers Island, which is off the causeway between Morehead City and Beaufort. The Wednesday meeting will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the Thursday meeting will be 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
DIFF Club members on Davis Island Wednesday for the fishing tournament can take the 5 p.m. ferry off the island to attend that night's meeting. Alger Willis Fishing Camps will run a special ferry back to the island after the meeting.
Club representatives will meet with the Park Service Wednesday morning to discuss the revisions. The club's Board of Directors has en

dorsed Alternative 4 in the original draft. That alternative envisions building new cabins at the current camp site and keeping the ferry service at Davis. The club is opposed to moving the camp to the south end or the vehicle ferry to Harker's Island.
The Park Service has received more than 500 comments from the public about the alternatives. Almost all were opposed to building cabins near the lighthouse. In fact, there's not much support for that option within the Park Service.

Fishing Tourney Full

With all 135 slots filled, there will be a full house when we gather on Davis Island Sept. 24 for the DIFF Club's annual fishing tournament.
The tournament will begin on noon that day and run through noon Saturday, Sept. 26. Entrants will compete for $6,100 in prize money in six categories -- red rum, flounder, bluefish, whiting and two species that will be chosen by the Tournament Committee on the island before the tournament begins. Cash prizes will be awarded to the five largest fish in each category.
Alger Willis Fishing Camps, Inc. will once again provide lunch for all contestants on Saturday.
