Fishing hasn't been bad this summer with a fair number of drum being caught on the north end of Davis Island.
A couple of 50-inch drum were caught near the old telephone poles at the north end during the Labor Day weekend, and many smaller drum have been caught at Drum Inlet during the last few weeks.
Spanish mackerel have started showing up at the Point in the morning and early evening. Small Hopkins lures are your best bet, though some nice-sized Spanish have been caught on cut bait by anglers bottom fishing.
The surf is still warm enough for pampano, which are scattered up and down the beach just beyond the suds.
Small bluefish are becoming a nusance, though some blues 20 inches and larger were caught at the Point during the last two weeks.
Flounder fishing hasn't been much to write home about. Many small ones are lurking about, but the keepers -- bigger than 15 inches -- are few and far between.
Hurricane Bonnie did some remodeling of the beach. Many of the nice holes at the south end are gone. That slough that ran south almost unbroken for 6 or 7 miles from the old church appears now only in spots. That marvelous deep hole in front of the weather tower also in gone.
In return, the hurricane carved a number of nice holes north of the Great Island Camp.
